The Central North Island is a fly fisher’s playground because it offers unmatched variety. The rivers running off the volcanic plateau and winding through Hawkes Bay hold robust populations of wild trout. Sight fishing is often the order of the day on these streams: polarized glasses, careful wading, and hunting fish holding in gin-clear pools.
Beyond the rivers, the region's lakes are vast, clear, and full of big fish. The boat option brings an entirely different dynamic, allowing you to cover more water and target trout cruising the edges and depths.
For those wanting to test their drags, the region's coastline offers world-class saltwater flats fishing. Dustin's boat allows anglers to swap their trout rods for heavy saltwater setups, hunting the estuaries and shallows for roaming packs of ocean predators. What you can catch
Rainbow trout are hard-fighting, acrobatic fish — expect them to jump. Browns in the back-country rivers grow large and selective on a rich diet of invertebrates. Both species are present year-round, with fishing style shifting by season: nymphing through winter, classic dry fly and emerger work from October through February, and big streamer action on the lake as fish move in to feed.
Rainbow trout
The signature sport fish of the region, Rainbow Trout are celebrated for their explosive energy, blistering runs, and spectacular aerial acrobatics. Whether you are stripping large streamers for aggressive fish cruising the lake drop-offs or dead-drifting nymphs in fast-flowing rivers, rainbows strike with aggression and fight hard. In New Zealand, these wild, fully naturalized fish are incredibly robust, providing consistent, high-octane action across both lake and river environments.
Brown trout
Found primarily in the backcountry streams and gin-clear rivers of the Central North Island, the New Zealand Brown Trout is renowned globally for its size and highly selective nature. These fish grow exceptionally large on a rich diet of invertebrates and are the ultimate prize for the dedicated dry-fly purist. Targeting them requires stealth, polarized glasses, and pinpoint accuracy. Sight-fishing for a wary, trophy-sized brown holding in crystal-clear water is a tense, highly rewarding game of chess.
Rod setup & recommended gear
5-weight to 7-weight single-hand rod, matched to conditions. Dustin provides rods, reels, and a full selection of flies for every situation — nymphs, dry flies, and streamers. Leaders 9–12 ft with 3x–5x tippet. Bring your own gear if you prefer — just let Dustin know in advance.
Saltwater Species: Kingfish, Kahawai, Trevally, Snapper & Parore
While the rivers get most of the global fame, the clear, shallow waters of Tauranga Harbour offer a world-class flats fishing experience. The ultimate prize here is the Yellowtail Kingfish, an incredibly powerful predator that you can spot tailing in knee-deep water and aggressively smashing baitfish. The saltwater fly-fishing roster is fully rounded out by other prized coastal species, including hard-fighting kahawai, silver trevally, snapper, and parore. This is an unparalleled sight-fishing arena that perfectly complements the freshwater trout experience.

The boat
Vessel is a 4.47 m Quintrex Explorer Trophy, purpose-built for versatility and performance on the water. Equipped with a Garmin Force electric motor and Garmin fish finder, it’s perfectly set up for fly fishing lakes, rivers or salt flats. The raised casting deck provides an ideal platform for sight-fishing to cruising fish, while the adjustable seating system can be positioned in five different locations, making it easy to adapt whether you’re drifting or anchored.
